Our Marble Resources
Marble is a metamorphic rock made out of limestone. When limestone is subjected to tremendous pressure for a long time such as being buried under other rock layers or floods, it gets transformed into marble.
Marble is more durable, elegant and considered to be more attractive than limestone and it’s been used in the most elite buildings since ancient civilizations.
Although most marble comes in white, marble can come in all different colours. Western Anatolia in modern Turkey has been home to most exquisite marble buildings, palaces and statues since ancient times.
Turkey’s history in dimensional decorative natural stone stretches back some four millennia, with the country providing material for statues and monuments for empires such as the Greek and Roman through the Ottoman era.
Thousands of years couldn’t manage to wear the architectural masterpiece left by these civilizations in Anatolia which proves the quality of the marble from the Turkish region.
And, while stone has been one of the country’s main products for thousands of years, there’s still plenty to be found. Turkey has a 40% share of world marble reserves. The total reserves including proven, probable and possible reserves are about 5 billion m3
Among the more than 100 varieties of Turkish marble, marbles having shades ranging from very light grey to black and brilliant white are available in Turkey.
Some world famous marble varieties are Afyon White, Afyon Tigerskin, Bilecik Pink, Marmara White, Burdur Brown, Denizli Travertine, Elazig Cherry, Karacabey Black, Golpazar? Beige, Milas Kavaklidere, Aeagan Bordeaux, Aksehir Black, Thracian Granite and Ayvalik Granite. In addition, Turkish marble has the quality which can compete easily with all other worldwide marbles.
Although resources are spread all over the country, the major marble and granite centres are found in the western Anatolian cities of Afyon, Bilecik, Burdur, Denizli, Mugla, Elazig, Balikesir and Eskisehir.
With its vast reserves, rich heritage of stone masonry, passion of architectural excellence, advanced processing techniques and capacity, Turkey is one of the important centres of the world natural stone industry.
